Email…You’re Fired! The Case for Showing Email the Door

To say that collaboration and open communication are both essential to workplace success is something of an understatement. Regardless of the type of business you’re running or the industry you’re operating in, work doesn’t happen in a vacuum – it’s the result of countless hardworking employees all coming together to contribute to a larger goal that is bigger than any one person.

 

For years, email has been one of the major drivers of this productivity revolution. When combined with the mobile world that we’re now living in, it is now possible for employees to communicate with one another and collaborate on projects from just about any location on Earth with an Internet connection. At the same time, collaboration is all about making sure people who require certain information to do their jobs have it at the right moment – the difference between “Reply To” versus “Reply All” certainly makes this difficult.

Just as email itself originally came along as a natural evolution of workplace practices, that evolution must continue – which is why the case for showing email the proverbial door is a strong one, indeed.

 

Taking exchanges OUT of the realm of email and into networks like Yammer and Workplace by Facebook doesn’t just address some of the natural problems inherent in email as a concept. It also allows for a much larger, real-time level of communication and collaboration that email never could.

 

People are already comfortable with social networks in general – it’s estimated that 89% of Internet users in the United States already actively participate in social networking to some degree. This is just a way to carry that into the workplace, too. Working out loud in enterprise social networks minimizes the tendency to stifle productivity through traditional brute in private emails. It eschews the “arm’s length” approach of email and brings everyone together in a much more intimate way than ever before, while still allowing them to collaborate and communicate in the way they feel the most comfortable.

 

In the end, showing email the door is less about chasing the “next big thing” and more about leveling the playing field of productivity in the first place. It’s a decision that can empower each person within an organization individually, along with the group as a whole, with the transparency, the trust and the tools necessary to succeed in today’s modern workplace.
